Two Assistant Professors of Physics

Text of the ad we’re running for our searches this fall. This will go live on the usual sites at the start of August, but as a sort of experiment in the power of social media, I’m going to share it here first, and see what that gets us.

We invite applications for two tenure-track Assistant Professor positions starting in September 2015, one in any area of theoretical physics or astrophysics, the other with a strong preference for biophysics or soft condensed matter (either experimental or theoretical). We encourage applications from interdisciplinary scientists and those who could make use of the college’s shared instrumentation resources (including AFM, SEM, micro-Raman and micro-FTIR instruments and IBM cluster computer; see http://www.union.edu/academic/learning-resources/campus-for-learning/instrumentation/ for more). Applicants should have strong research credentials, some teaching experience, and a strong commitment to undergraduate education including research with undergraduate students. Union is a highly selective, small (2200 students) liberal arts college with an engineering program, located in the Capital District of New York State, a region heavily engaged in science and R&D. The Department of Physics and Astronomy (www.physics.union.edu) includes eleven full-time faculty in a variety of fields including astronomy, astrophysics, atomic physics, environmental physics, nuclear physics, materials science, statistical mechanics, and art restoration research. Union College is an equal opportunity employer and strongly committed to student and workforce diversity. Union provides a blend of intellectual, social and cultural opportunities to facilitate the integrated academic, social and personal development of a diverse community. We value and are committed to a host of diverse populations and cultures including, but not limited to, those based on race, religion, disability, ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender, gender identity and national origin. Applicants should submit a single .pdf file containing a detailed curriculum vita, a statement on teaching (with an emphasis on undergraduates), a statement of research interests (including a proposed start-up budget and plans for involving undergraduate students). Applicants should also arrange for three letters of reference to be sent. All application materials should be sent to Lynnette R. Stec, Department of Physics and Astronomy, Union College, Schenectady, NY 12308 (Email: physics-search@union.edu). We will begin the review of applications on October 10, 2014 and continue until the positions are filled.
